Exploring Our Senses

The IB Inquirer Busy Bees made an inquiry into how people use their senses to understand of scientific principles.

Committed to discover the Central Idea of discovering interrelationships between living things and their environments we investigated our school area and looked for our own object of interest and presented them to the class.

We wrote three sentences about our favorite objects, describing it and how it works or its purpose (Form) A study was made into lines of inquiry of using the five senses by guessing what’s inside the Mystery Box of Senses. (connection)We also discussed the various reasons why some objects have acceptable smell, taste and feel and why others do not. (causation) We also discussed how to take care of our senses and things we should do to keep it healthy. (responsibility)

Student Learning assessment: Using the sensory word walls the Teacher will say a sensory word and each Bee will have to answer what senses is used. Each correct answer gets a lego block and the student with most number of the Lego blocks, wins

What is the universal looks like, teacher?

Children naturally explore the world, and art supports this by allowing creative, unstructured learning. Artistic play builds problem-solving, observation, and critical thinking skills. While the popular right-brain/left-brain theory—suggesting right-brain dominance boosts creativity—has been debunked, it still inspired valuable teaching methods. Roger Sperry’s research led to widespread belief that the right brain handles intuition and creativity, while the left manages logic. Though both hemispheres work together, the theory helped artists develop new techniques. Books like Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain show how changing thinking patterns can enhance creativity. Ultimately, art remains a powerful tool for brain development and expression.

How to develop age appropriate decision-making skills in your kids?

Teaching children age-appropriate decision-making builds confidence, creativity, and responsibility. Instead of overwhelming kids with too many options, offer two or three choices to help them think and choose wisely. Gradually, decisions can become more significant as they grow. Children should have more outdoor activities to cut the risk of short sightedness

Research shows a strong link between environmental factors and the rise in myopia (shortsightedness) among children. Spending more time outdoors reduces myopia risk, while indoor activities like gaming increase it. A study from King’s College London found additional risk factors: summer birth, highly educated mothers, and less outdoor time. Surprisingly, children born via fertility treatment had lower odds of myopia. While genetics play a role, the sharp rise in cases—especially in East Asia—points to modern lifestyle pressures.
